Epictetus, born a slave, knew freedom was not only about chains. The deeper freedom is over yourself — your reactions, your habits, your attention. Lose that, and no external liberty quite reaches you.
There's a small version of this in learning. The learner who masters the impulse to quit, to skip a day, to fear the mistake, is freer than the one with more time but less self-command.
