Daily Reflection

Before you can judge the world wisely, you have to know the instrument doing the judging: yourself. Your fears, your habits, the stories you quietly tell yourself — these color everything you see.

Self-knowledge is humbling work. It means noticing when you are defensive, when you are avoiding, when your confidence is really just comfort. But it is the ground every other kind of wisdom is built on.

Writing is one of the oldest tools for this. Put a thought into words — especially in a language you are still learning — and you are forced to slow down and meet it honestly.

Common questions

It means self-understanding is the foundation of wisdom: you must know your own biases and tendencies before you can judge anything else clearly.

It is commonly attributed to Aristotle, though the exact phrasing is uncertain, so we mark it as attributed.

Reflect regularly in writing, notice your emotional reactions, and ask why you believe what you believe.

Make it yours

Carry it with you

In your own words, what does this thought mean to you? Write three or four sentences in English about a moment when it felt true — saying it yourself is how it stays with you.
